How Many Grafts Do I Need?
Graft count is the number patients ask about first, and the number that means least without context. What determines the result is how those grafts are distributed and placed.
How many grafts do people actually get?
Across 35 of our own FUE procedures the count ran from 255 grafts up to 4,510, and the middle case was 2,410. Every one of those 35 was photographed at 12 months. Here is the whole set, with nothing left out. Read them as a picture of typical work, not as a prediction of your number.
One thing to know before you read it. When a session covered the hairline, the mid-scalp and the crown together, the count you see is for the whole session, not for one patch. So a single case can appear in more than one row of the first table.

Because most sessions cover more than one area, the clearest way to look at it is by which areas were done together. Every case sits in exactly one row here, so these five rows add up to 35.

Added up, that is 88,057 grafts across the 35 sessions. Twenty-eight of them were men, with sessions from 655 to 4,510 grafts, and seven were women, from 255 to 1,950. The very bottom of the range is not a tiny scalp case, it is eyebrows, where 255 to 502 grafts is normal, and beard work, which sat between 655 and 2,220.
What these tables cannot do is give you your number. Every count above was decided in person, after looking at that patient’s donor area, measuring the area they wanted covered and talking through what they were hoping for. A bigger number is not a better plan and a smaller one is not a worse plan, and you cannot read your own count off someone else’s row. It is a starting point for a conversation, nothing more.
Typical graft ranges by area
As a rough guide only, your real number is confirmed at assessment:
- Hairline / temples: around 1,500 to 2,500 grafts
- Frontal third: around 2,000 to 3,000 grafts
- Crown / vertex: around 1,500 to 2,500 grafts (the crown is a swirl, so it’s graft-hungry)
- Mid-scalp: around 1,500 to 2,500 grafts
- Full top coverage: often 4,000 to 6,000+ grafts, sometimes across two sessions
Norwood stage as a starting point
Your Norwood stage gives a ballpark: early recession (Norwood 2 to 3) might need 1,500 to 2,500; a more advanced pattern (Norwood 5 to 6) can need 4,000+ to restore meaningful coverage. But the scale describes pattern, not a precise count, two men at the same stage can need very different numbers.
Why two identical patterns need different numbers
Three factors quietly change the maths:
- Hair calibre, thick individual hairs cover more scalp, so coarse hair needs fewer grafts for the same look.
- Colour contrast, dark hair on pale skin shows every gap, so it needs higher density; hair and skin of similar tone looks fuller with less.
- Curl and wave, wavy or curly hair covers more area per graft than dead-straight hair.
What “density” realistically means
Native hair sits at roughly 80 to 100 follicular units per cm². A transplant doesn’t recreate that everywhere, a natural, durable result usually aims for around 35 to 45 units per cm² in the restored area, which reads as full to the eye without exhausting your donor. Promises of “native density everywhere” are usually a red flag for over-harvesting.
One session or two?
Large restorations are sometimes staged across two sessions, both to respect what the scalp can safely take in one sitting and to protect graft survival. Splitting a big case isn’t upselling; it’s often how you get the best long-term coverage from a finite donor.
Why the estimate is only firm in person
Online calculators (including ours) are a useful starting point, but the real number comes from examining your donor density, measuring the recipient area and discussing your goals. Your surgeon maps the scalp in zones so the plan is systematic rather than a single guessed figure, and so you can see exactly where your grafts are going.

Is more grafts always better? No, over-packing risks poor survival and wastes donor hair. The right number is the one that looks natural and lasts.

Grafts are not the same as your result
It’s easy to treat graft count like horsepower: more must be better. In reality, the number is only as good as where the grafts go and how they survive. A skilled surgeon creating natural angles and a soft, age-appropriate hairline with 2,000 grafts will produce a better result than a clinic packing 3,500 grafts in badly, with poor survival and a flat, pluggy look.
This is why we resist quoting a number before we’ve assessed you. Two people with identical photos can need very different counts, and the “biggest number” quote is sometimes a sign a clinic is optimising for the invoice rather than your hairline. The right plan balances coverage now against protecting your finite donor for the future, a judgement, not just a calculation.
